This is a photo of a sundog taken along Interstate 75. A sundog is the result of sunlight passing through a thin layer of ice crystals, either contained within cirrus cloud or falling at lower levels. They occur only when the hexagonal ice crystals are oriented horizontally, with the large sides facing down. Sometimes, they will appear on both sides of the sun.
