Science City located atop the dormant volcano Haleakala on the Hawaiian island of Maui is a prime location for astronomical observatories. At over 10,000 ft (3,225 m), the observatories are above a third of the earth's atmosphere. On the photo above, at the left, are the University of Hawaii's observatories and on the right are the Air Force's Maui Optical Station Telescopes. The large building right of center houses the 3.67-meter telescope. The roof opens to the sky and the building collapses down around the telescope. Dark skies and the high altitude of this volcanic summit allow some of the best seeing in the world.
