Winter has arrived in upstate New York. The above photo was taken on November 17, 2002 after a night of freezing rain. In the aftermath of this ice storm, everything was encased in 1/4"-1/2" (0.63-1.3 cm) of ice. As the picture shows, a bit of scarlet color has been temporarily preserved, but this ice storm brought down those stubborn leaves still clinging to autumn. Even though the scenery was positively breathtaking, there was some damage to less hardy plants, and getting around proved to be a chore.
