Soufriere Hills Volcano
May 23, 2003
This panorama, looking south from the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, shows the Soufrière Hills volcano on the left and Plymouth, the former capital of Montserrat, on the right. Montserrat is located in the Leeward Islands, about 300 miles (480 km) southeast of Puerto Rico. The volcano is still active since its last major eruption in 1995, and pyroclastic flows occur regularly, some of which are quite large. A small flow may be seen on the slope of the volcano. On clear nights, the hot rocks in these flows produce a red glow. Plymouth is lifeless now because it's covered with ash in rock; a new capital is being built near Soldier Ghaut Bay.
