September 30, 2003
This photo was taken on September 16, 2003 at 7:43 a.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) in Caledon, Ontario, Canada. The night had been cool, and fog was forming above the warmer ponds and marshes, like a ghostly smoke. The Sun has risen high enough to shine downwards through the trees, into a marshy area nearly saturated with this provocative mist. Note the sharp contrast between the unobstructed sunlight, being scattered by the tiny water droplets, and the darker shadows of the tree foliage, resulting in these dramatic rays.
