Thunderstorms over north central Texas last month not only produced the mammatus clouds shown in yesterday's Earth Science Picture of the Day, they generated a pretty wild lightning display as well. As shown on the above photo, most of the action was cloud to ground lightning. I put the camera on a tripod and pointed it through a window and just stood there taking one picture after another-- never once did I move the camera. About five homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth area got hit by lightning and burned to the ground, and one person died when he was caught out in the storms.
