This rainbow, captured over the Sonoma Valley near Kenwood, California, had considerable difficulty showing off its colors. Even though it proudly arches across the sky, since it was taken just after sunset (7:48 Pacific Daylight Time on August 21), it must compete with the crimson twilight for a little attention. As is the case with sunset colors, only the longest wavelengths of visible light (oranges and reds) in rainbows can be detected after the Sun sets. A 4.0 mega-pixel Sony Mavica camera was used to take this photo.
