On the night of August 29th/30th a severe thunderstorm battered the Alps of southern Austria and northern Italy. It was an impressive spectacle indeed. Huge thunderclouds were illuminated by frequent inner cloud and cloud to ground lightning. At least 2 people were killed as a result of flooding and mudslides from torrential rains accompanying the storm. In the Italian province of Udine, 400 mm (16 inches) of water fell in about six hours (400 liters per square meter). Above the towering cumulonimbus clouds, a number of constellations were easily visible.
