This photo was captured early in the morning, while the Sun was still low on the horizon, in mid December 2003 over the Pajaro Valley in California. Prior to the Sun cresting the hillside, this narrow band of orange and pink light was visible for only a few minutes. The coloration was caused by wildfires in Southern California, which imbued the atmosphere with smoke and ash particles, thus more effectively scattering sunlight.
