Atmospheric waves are frequently encountered above the lee side (eastern flank) of the Rocky Mountains. Soaring pilots love to fly in mountain waves, but they're the bane of pilots flying other planes. These waves aren't always visible, but an impulse of moisture brought to life the rotors pictured above, near Boulder Colorado.
