The above composite is a mosaic of 13 unprocessed images taken from Redwod City, California on October 31, 2001 between 5:25 and 5:55 p.m. The Moon's altitude varied from just touching the horizon to 6 degrees for the first set (top row). For the last picture in the sequence (bottom row), the Moon's elevation was 55 degrees -- note the different rotation. Notice also that the horizontal image size remains the same while the vertical size varies by more than 10% and that the Moon loses color as it moves away from the horizon. Take a look at tonight's full Moon -- the full Thunder Moon. There will be a second full Moon on the 31st of this month.

Photo details: Canon EOS D30, Canon EF 100-400 L IS at 400 (640 effective), f/5.6, ISO 200, various speeds from 1/15 to 1/320 sec. plus one image taken about 8 hours later at f7.1, 1/800 sec.
