The photo above shows lightning writhing in the skies above Sheffield, England on the night of August 12, 2004. This stunning electrical storm put a damper on the Sheffield Astronomical Society's viewing of the annual Perseid Meteor Shower. Instrumentation set up by the Society to listen to reflected signals from ionized meteor trails, revealed that there were plenty of meteors overhead -- small consolation for the missed visual observations.
