The above photo showing the scenic Mitten Buttes was taken on the Navajo Indian Reservation, north of Kayenta, Arizona. Mitten Buttes are Permian in age (248-290 million years ago) and composed of soft sandstones of the Cutler formation. These monuments contain many vertical joints, which play a major role in their erosion. Standing tall against an open sky, the Mitten Buttes have been the setting for many "Western" movies over the years.
