The falls above, on the Connecticut River near Turner's Falls, Massachusetts, is in the middle of a populous area but is little known because it's not visible from the road. Most of the river bypasses the falls through a power canal. Unfortunately, there are many other places on the Connecticut River and its tributaries where natural falls have been replaced by dams. These structures have negatively impacted the salmon breeding migration, and attempts to restore it though fish ladders and hatcheries have been only marginally successful.
