The above photo showing a mountain summit coiffed in snow and cloud was taken near sunrise, earlier this winter, from Breil-sur-Roya, in southeastern France. This handsome cap cloud is referred to as "nuage chapeau" in French, meaning "hat cloud." With so much snow, a hat would be well appreciated by such an exposed peak. On this wintry morning, only near the summit did condensation exceed evaporation. See yesterday's Earth Science Picture of the Day.
