I stumbled across this lovely vernal pool on an afternoon walk through the woods in Mount Vernon, New Hampshire, on April 18, 2005. The reflection was irresistible -- I just had to take a photograph. I counted at least seven independent egg sacs in this pool; both salamander and frog. The depth of the pool (at least 30 cm or 12 inches) should enable these eggs to hatch. I'd expect this vernal pool to survive at least three consecutive weeks without rain. See also yesterday's Earth Science Picture of the Day.
