This sunset photo over Presque Ilse State Park was taken on June 15 (2003) near Erie, Pennsylvania. We live near the shoreline of Lake Erie, and Presque Isle is occasionally visible across the bay. However, in spite of our lake-side location, low-lying grey clouds over Lake Erie often prevent good sunset photos. When the Sun is close to the horizon, the longer path-length of sunlight through the lower atmosphere can result in charming sunsets (or sunrises) if clouds or aerosols, such as dust particles, are in the vicinity of the Sun. We see more reds and oranges since the shorter wavelength colors (blues and greens) have been scattered from our view.
