This photo was taken on the 7th June 2005 and shows the small town of Marvao, Portugal, perched upon a granite crest (860 meters high) in the southern province of Alentejo. Marvao is surrounded by walls that date back to the Moorish period (9th century A.D.). Its candidacy to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list has already been presented by the Portuguese government. Nearby Marvao are the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Ammaia.
