This picture of Bryce Canyon, Utah was taken on June 7 at about 20:00 (8:00 p.m.) from Sunset Point. Whereas the colors at sunrise (see the Earth Science Picture of the Day for 12/10/2004) show deep red colors of the canyon, the colors at sunset tend to be more grayish and the shadows more sharp-edged. Despite its name, this magnificent landscape isn't really a canyon, rather it's a huge natural amphitheater created by eons of erosion along the eastern flank of the Paunsaugunt Plateau.
