This scarlet sunrise was captured at Hobart Airport in Tasmania, Australia on March 5, 2005 -- late summer in the Southern Hemisphere. The tail of the plane I was about to board can be seen at the left of the picture. Near sunset and sunrise, when the Sun is still below the horizon, most of the shorter wavelengths (yellows, greens and blues) have been scattered out of the observer's line of sight. If clouds are present to reflect the reddened sunlight, crimson and and orange colors often accent the sky. Mid level clouds (altostratus and altocumulus) generally produce the most captivating sunrises and sunsets.
