The frosty photo above showing ice coated beach grass by the shores of Lake Superior was taken from Michigan's Upper Peninsula (UP) on November 24, 2005. This wintry scene was created by a strong low pressure system, which intensified as it moved over the relatively warm waters of Lake Superior. Winds gusting to over 50 miles/hour (80 km/hour) and temperatures dropping to below 10 degrees F (-13 C) produced a freezing spray that coated everything within 100 feet (30 m) or so of the shoreline -- winter comes early to the UP. After the blizzard passed by, lake effect snows caused whiteout conditions for two solid days.
