The photo above shows one of several pigtail bridges found in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This one is located on Iron Mountain Road (U.S. Highway 16A), which is part of the 70 mile (112 km) Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway. These pigtail bridges are made of wood and curl around on top of the road in order to gain elevation quickly over a short distance. Several tunnels on this road are situated in such a way that, when traveling north, the Mount Rushmore National Monument is visible through the tunnels. [Revised November 2017]
