The photo above shows a magnificent and near-continuous lightning storm that was captured off the western coast of Italy, in the Mediterranean Sea, on July 29, 2006. Note the distant, powerful bolt being discharged into the sea. Lightning is nature's attempt at neutralizing the negative and positive electrical charges created between cloud structures as well as between clouds and the Earth's surface. This energetic storm persisted for well over an hour with hardly a break and was distant enough that very little thunder could be heard.
