The serene scene above is highlighted by the sunlit sails of a small boat off the coast of San Diego, California. This fortuitous shot was taken in the late afternoon on August 4, 2006 from the USCGC Morganthau as we were leaving San Diego en route to San Francisco. The land in the background is Point Loma. Our cutter was headed due west and the Sun is behind the sailboat, which was headed south. The sky was just about perfect for this photo opportunity since the stratocumulus clouds in the background seemed to block out all but those rays of sunlight illuminating the taut sails.
