This photo of a rainbow fragment was taken from Lossiemouth, Moray, Scotland on August 31, 2006. It was observed around 7:00 p.m. -- about an hour before sunset. As the clouds changed position and the light intensity varied, the colors alternatively dimmed and brightened. The largest raindrops typically produce the purest and most pleasing rainbow colors. Though this fascinating display lasted only approximately 15 minutes, it was a joy to watch.
