Pictured above are Landsat satellite images of the city of Dubai (loacted in the Persian Gulf), one of the 7 emirates that makes up the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Landsat 1 image at left was acquired on January 22, 1973. At right is a Landsat 7 image, acquired on October 11, 2006. Both images are false-color composites of 3 visible wavelength bands.

Dubai has a population of more than 1.2 million and is one of the world's most modern and rapidly growing cities. Compare and contrast the side-by-side images above -- a tremendous amount of growth and development have occurred during the past 33 years. The Palm Islands are actually man-made residential areas.
