Flying over Greenland on a flight from Moscow to New York last summer, the dense cloud cover that often obscures this icy island parted to reveal a spectacular view of the azure fjords along the southeastern coastline, littered with shards of ice. Glaciologists measuring the mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet during the past two summers have recorded a rapid acceleration of ice melt in precisely the region shown above.
