The image above shows Venice, Italy, as seen from the Landsat-7 satellite. Venice is one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations. It's located in northeastern Italy along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The Grand Canal can be observed as it meanders through the city -- from the bridge that connects Venice to the mainland (Ponte della Libertà) to the huge San Marco Canal. Note the fish-shape of this island city. The ubiquitous terra-cotta tiles of the Venetian roofs have a salmon colored hue which has been enhanced in this Landsat-7 false-color composite image. Image acquired on Aug. 26, 2001. See also the Earth Science Picture of the Day for January 22, 2007.
