Reddish Sky Reflected on Travertine Terraces
August 09, 2007
The reddened landscape and sky shown above was captured at Pamukkale, Turkey on March 20, 2006. Dust and aerosols in the lower atmosphere have scattered out all but the longest wavelengths of light. The colored sky is reflected on sediment-laden thermal ponds among these cascading travertine terraces, which look a startling white under full daylight. Pamukkale is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage list. See also the Earth Science Picture of the Day for May 18, 2007.
