This spectacular web of lightning was observed over Gurnee, Illinois on April 2, 2007. Both cloud-to-ground lightning and cloud-to-cloud lightning were seen during this nighttime thunderstorm. A single lightning bolt can deliver 100,000 amperes of current at millions of volts, and heat the surrounding air to 50,000 degrees F (about 28,000 C).
