Skiathos Island Lightning
May 05, 2008
The blast of lightning shown above was taken from Skiathos Island, in Greece, in July of 2006. The storm responsible for this cloud-to-ground strike was one of the most powerful storms, in terms of electricity, in the past 20 years here. A big bolt of lightning, such as this one, can briefly heat the surrounding air to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Photo taken about 10 p.m. local time.
