The photo above shows a remarkable texture to the sky over Kernville, California. These mid-level altostratus clouds look like a rumpled gray blanket. They were observed between two winter storm systems and likely formed in relatively stable atmospheric conditions -- vertical motion was minimized. The camera is facing just about due north, up the Kern River in east central California. Photo taken on February 23.
