July 2010 Earth Science Picture of the Day Viewer's ChoiceThe photo above shows just a snippet of an amazing electrical storm that lashed Athens, Greece on June 28, 2010. It’s actually a sequence of 42 stacked shots, caught in Olympic Stadium, during a severe early afternoon thunderstorm. It took me about 30 minutes to capture 51 lightning shots; nine shots were ruined because of excess brightness. These awesome cloud-to-ground bolts were striking the surface approximately 500 ft (150 m) in front of the camera.

Photo Details: Canon EOS 550D camera; shutter speed of 3.2 seconds x 42 shots; aperture of 4.0; ISO 100; Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 lens; focal length of 15.0 mm.
