The photo above featuring a typically U-shaped oxbow lake was snapped over northwestern Louisiana from the basket of a hot air balloon. The lake is called Old River Lake and is part of C. Bickham Dickson Park in Shreveport, Louisiana. Oxbow lakes are cut off river meanders that form when a river changes its course. On this mid-autumn morning, a shallow fog overlies the Red River, flowing from right to left, just behind the oxbow. We were flying at about 1,200 ft (366 m) and traveling at about 30 mph (48 km/h). Photo taken on October 31, 2010.
