The photo above showing snow-clad Pikes Peak (14,110 ft or 4,301 m) in the distance was taken on a gorgeous mid-spring day in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Record or near record snowpacks in several western states this winter and spring have contributed to the flooding of several major river systems having their headwaters in the Rockies, such as the Arkansas, Missouri and Colorado Rivers. Melting snow accounts for upwards of 70 percent of the water supply in the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Nevada and Basin and Range region of the U.S. In the foreground, BMX rider, Mika Shaw, is taking a practice run on the Pikes Peak BMX track in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Photo taken on May 14, 2011.
