This beautiful mountain scene was captured just outside the town of Saas-Fee in Switzerland. During the summer months, subalpine meadows (found at elevations of approximately 5,000 ft to 6,500 ft or 1,500 to 2,000 m) brim with wildflowers. Fee Glacier is shown in the background at left-center. In recent years, many Swiss glaciers, such as the Fee, have been retreating at an accelerating rate. According to research by Zurich's Federal Institute of Technology, during the period from 1999-2008 12 percent of glacial ice was lost from about 1,500 glaciers. At right-center is a patch of snow yet to melt from the previous winter's snowfall. Photo taken on July 21, 2009.
