June 2012 Viewer's ChoiceThe photos above were both taken from the same spot on the shore of Lake Myvatn in eastern Iceland. The sunset was September 9, 2011, and the sunrise, with a superb Belt of Venus, was the following morning. At the latitudes of Iceland, the sunset seemed to go on for a long time with many variations of color and shadow. In between the sunset and sunrise, we were treated to a wonderful display of the Northern Lights. Unfortunately, my little camera was not up to capturing the subtleties of the aurora. In Icelandic, myvatn means something like "lake of the extremely annoying little gnats" which fill the air in summer and provide food for migrating waterfowl.
