The Cottian Alps in Alpenglow

This photo of the Cottian Alps basking in alpenglow was captured a few minutes before sunrise on December 9, 2012, from Castagneto Po, Italy. The camera is facing to the southwest. Monte Viso (12,602 ft or 3,841 m) is the prominent peak at left-center. The Sun is still below the horizon at the base of the mountain but its upper reaches are imbued with the warm light called alpenglow or sometimes aspenglow.
The Basilica of Superga, in the foreground, resides on a 2,205 ft (672 m) ridge and is one of the iconic symbols of the city of Turin. Due to the effects of perspective, the basilica seems much closer than is actually the case. In reality, the shot was taken approximately 8 mi (13 km) from the basilica and 52 mi (84 km) from Monviso. Turin lies in the valley between the basilica and the Cottian Alps.
