The photo above showing a band of eye-catching cirrus clouds hanging in a royal blue sky and framed by conifers was captured over Woodinville, Washington. These clouds actually extended from nearly horizon to horizon. Their gauzy look is a result of falling ice crystals sublimating in a region of drier air. Note that the top of this cloud layer actually appears closer to the horizon than does the bottom. Photo taken on June 4, 2013.
