The photo above shows a lovely sunset over the seaside village
of Alcochete, Portugal. These well-positioned mid-level clouds (altostratus)
were ignited as the Sun approached the horizon. When the Sun hugs the horizon, the
longer path length of sunlight acts to filter out shorter wavelength colors (greens,
blues and violets) leaving red and orange colors to paint the scene. Contributing
to this beautiful seascape is moonlight from a just-risen full Moon. Note, the
Sun has set to the left of the camera position -- the Moon is just off the
frame at right. Photo taken on July 22, 2013.
