September 2013 Viewer's Choice The image above shows a magnificent view of the night sky as observed from above Lake Korission on the island of Corfu, Greece on May 13, 2013. Below the glow of the Milky Way, a springtime thunderstorm fires up in the distance. The cloud-to-ground bolts at left are striking the town of Preveza, on the mainland of Greece, some 57 mi (92 km) from my location. Note that the dark streaks within the Milky Way result from interstellar dust lanes that effectively obscure any light emanating from sources that are more distant. To enhance the original quality of this image I stacked 10 photos using specialized pre-processing software.
