Pictured above in the far background is Naatsis’aan (Head of the Earth Woman), a sacred mountain to the Navajo people. It was taken from Page, Arizona, as I was preparing to explore the Kaiparowits Plateau. Naatsis’aan (aka Navajo Mountain) is a huge laccolithic dome, rising to a height of 10,328 ft (3,148 m), straddling the Utah-Arizona border and in the Navajo Nation. Glen Canyon and Lake Powell are found nearby. Note also the layered terrain in the foreground and the table-top, sandstone mesas in the middle distance. Photo taken on August 28, 2013.
