Shown above is the Castle of Caravaca de la Cruz in Murcia, Spain, flanked by the waxing crescent Moon as photographed in early December 13, 2013. This spectacular sanctuary was built by the Moors in the 12th century. Note the earthshine on the non-illuminated portion of the lunar disk. In winter earthshine is usually more noticeable than at other times of the year since the Earth's cloud cover, and snow cover as well, tend to enhance it by reflecting more sunlight to space.
