As shown above the famous asterism the Big Dipper appears to lie on the road to Roque de Los Muchachos, Canary Islands, Spain. A local stargazer is taking in the beautiful night sky. The excellent quality of the nighttime sky for astronomical observations in the Canaries is protected by law. As a result, the observatories of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) are an astronomy reserve, available to the international community since 1979. For residents of the Northern Hemisphere, the Big Dipper is now high in the northern sky. Note the North Star is just out of the frame at top left. Photo taken on September 30, 2013 at 6:42 a.m.

Photo Details: Canon 60Da camera; ISO 2500; 24 mm at f/2; 15 second exposure. I used a diffuse filter in the camera lens to increase and highlight the main stars of Ursa Major.
