At 7,516 ft (2,291m) high Mount Ngauruhoe is the largest, youngest and most active cone of the much larger New Zealand, Tongariro Volcano complex. More than 60 eruptions have occurred since written records began in 1839, with the last lava flow occurring in 1954. Traditionally Ngauruhoe has erupted at least every 9 years, but there's been no eruption since 1975. This photo was taken during an expedition to Ngauruhoe in November 2012. At one point while sleeping just above its broad base, I thought I might actually be washed off the mountain by torrents of rain water surging beneath my tent.
