A large bank of mid-level clouds creates a textbook buttermilk or mackerel sky over misty English Bay, Vancouver as seen on August 26, 2014. This eye-catching altocumulus formation often precedes a change in the weather. The phrase "Mackerel in the sky, three days dry" proved true for this particular display. Three days after this shot was taken residents of the area woke to cloudy skies and a forecast of rain. The phrase “mackerel sky” comes from the cloud formation looking similar to the markings of an adult king mackerel.
