Seen above is Monte Viso (12,602 ft or 3,841 m) in Piedmont, Italy once thought to be the tallest of the Alps. Monte Viso, also known as Monviso, is considerably taller than the mountains around it so I was able to get this shot from Colle del Lys, about 40 mi (60 km) to the north. The day I shot this picture was a particularly windy day with winds on the mountain gusting over 45 mph (70 kmph). The black and white image enhances the blowing snow. The sharp profile shown here and steep-sided peaks of many ranges in the Alps result from glacial erosion. Photo taken January 4, 2015.
