St. Patrick's Day Aurora
May 06, 2015
Shown above is another look at the spectacular St. Patrick's Day, 2015, aurora. This colorful photo was captured from Pinawa Dam, Manitoba, Canada. A powerful coronal mass ejection on the Sun triggered a severe geomagnetic storm on March 15/16, 2015, allowing auroras to be observed in the middle latitudes of both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This storm's Kp index, which is a metric used for the magnitude of global geomagnetic activity (ranging between 1 and 9), was measured as high as 8. Photo taken at approximately 9:00 p.m.
