The charming waterfall featured above is one of five such cascades in the Natural Park of Serra da Estrela, Portugal. These cascades are actually relatively new -- likely early 20th century. They resulted when the courses of the Loriga and Alvoco Rivers were shortened by cutting off looping meanders in an effort to reclaim the fertile bottom lands for agricultural purposes.
