Garnet Lake, Ansel Adams Wilderness

Shown above is beautiful Garnet Lake, California, in the Ansel Adams Wilderness of the Sierra Nevadas. Banner Peak (12,947 ft or 3,946 m) and Mount Ritter (13,143 ft or 4,006 m) are in the background at right. I was at first surprised by how full the lake appeared considering what little snowfall the Sierras received this past winter -- record low snow packs in many areas. However, rainfall and spring flow also help fill the lake. Note that even in a dry year patches of snow remain in shaded spots well into July.

It took three days of backpacking to reach the lake, but I was rewarded with gorgeous views, lovely silence and pleasant temperatures. Even with the squadrons of mosquitoes, my little trek was well worth the effort. Photo taken on June 25, 2015.
